![]() ![]() In my early teens in the Philly suburbs, I started playing guitar. Hi, I'm a "long time lurker, first time poster". The Penco Museum site.(This list is incomplete.)Īnd an article in Vintage Guitar Magazine on Penco guitars and the pre "Lawsuit guitar" era.Īnd why people like these old cheap guitars.įeel free to post if you have experience with Penco guitars.thanks. Just a little information on these nice and inexpensive old guitars. I remember being pretty impressed with them, especially at the price. I do recall picking up and examining a Tele of theirs back when it was new, and I did also see several Fender bass copies. I have seen Penco Telecasters and other electric guitars, and I am told they are also good players and well made guitars, but have not played one lately. I bought it on line a few years ago, and it had been damaged in transit, and sat up in my attic most of this time. It sounds great for a guitar that set me back less than $10Ġ. It still has a full set of old strings on it and I have tuned it down to D, a full step low to ease pressure on that old neck. I'm giving it a quick and dirty glue job right now. ![]() ![]() I have a beat up Model A24 12 string Penco that has the top separated at the lower bout and a split there as well. They were and still are good sounding and playing guitars, and there were lots of them around.some surface on ebay from time to time. They had a "zero fret", and a Gibson Heritage style screw adjustable bridge. The acoustics used good wood - solid spruce tops on either rosewood or maple sides and back, with mahogany necks and rosewood fingerboards. Penco acoustics came in several models of both 6 and 12 strings, modeled on Gibson and Martin designs. They were made in Japan by the Hoshino company, which also made Ibanez and Greco guitars of that period along with several other branded instruments. Penco branded acoustic and electric guitars were imported by a Philadelphia company called Penn Music or something similar in the mid 1970's.
